POSTED FOR VIRGINIA:

Last year I received this card from a close friend...and I fell in love with it immediately. After deconstructing the card, I went on to make 100 mini versions of this card to give as gifts to my daughter's various teachers. Embarassed I hope you will enjoy this card and give it a whirl too!

Warning: This is a photo-intensive post!

Yes, this is a finicky project but it yields absolutely beautiful results - you have the opportunity to use a variety of different papers and the card has a 3D texture to it! Grab a tea, coffee or glass of wine and read on!

Let me first review the supplies:

You will need pattern paper of course - I chose to use 4 different patterns that were double sided but you can easily make this project using one type of pattern paper.

Strong adhesive, a bone folder (optional but it gives much better results!) and any embellishments that you choose to use.

So let's start -

Cut 4 squares from your pattern papers - if you chose 4 different patterns, you would have 4 squares. Each square should be cut one-half an inch smaller than the next. So, I cut a 3", 2.5", 2" and 1.5" square. You can vary the size of your tree by varying the size of your squares.

These are my squares:

Now fold each square opposite point to opposite point. Repeat with the other corners. (I used my bone folder to make crisp clean folds in my pattern paper.)

You should now have an "X" in your square. I have included two pictures so you can see the exterior and interior of the folded square.

Take care with this step as it forms the basis of your tree and all subsequent folds build ontop of this fold.

With your square, "pinch" the sides of one quarter of the "X" to create a triangle. Yes, this is confusing but please don't give up! If I can do it, so can you. See the pictures below for clarification.

Repeat for all remaining squares.

Now, fold one flap of the triangle over, similar to making a paper airplane. Here is a picture of the triangle now.

Fold the other flap of the triangle over so now you have two sides of a paper airplane folded.

Here is another vantage point of the fold.

Repeat for the remaining squares.

Stack your now folded squares in descending order, beginning with the largest square, to form a Christmas tree. Here is a bottom to top view.

And a side view...

And an aerial view...

Adhere the folded squares together with a glue dot on the point or some liquid adhesive. Use a strong adhesive like Zip Dry.

Here is a completed Christmas tree.

And a side view of the completed tree - this is what made me make so many cards - I love how the tree comes toward you and you can touch the tree.

Lastly, here is my finished card. Please note that I took the card base off for illustration purposes only.

Once the tree is finished and the adhesive is dry, adhere to your card base and embellish!

I really hope you try out this card. Thanks so much for checking out my challenge!

Please post your creations in this thread so that I may ooh and aahhhh over your work!

If you have any questions, please post in this thread as well and I will do my very best to answer your questions.

Stunning V!! I'm a little challenged when it comes to folding, but your directions are awesome. Looks like a fun one to try!
